How language can change perceptions

Generally, the way we describe a situation can influence whether it is seen as positive or negative. Pet euthanasia is a difficult situation that causes your clients emotional pain.

You can start changing the emotional price veterinary professionals pay, by changing how you, and the teams around you, talk about and perceive your role.

The positive language that you can use includes phrases such as ‘peaceful and painless passing’, ‘help transition’, ‘escort’ or ‘release’.

Changing the perception of your role

As you move towards a bond-centred euthanasia process, you naturally find yourself playing the role of a co-ordinator. In this role, you not only release your patient from pain and suffering but also provide the owners with a meaningful experience where they can honour the bond they have with their pet.
